Photographs, Works on Paper

Captivated from an early age by the inherent power of the photographic image, Roland began his career in this highly specialised field with a two-year internship at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.

On returning to London, he pursued this passion through academic channels and completed a Masters in the History of Art with a specialization in works of art on paper, adding to his earlier degree in the same subject. This was a natural progression towards becoming a curator. It was whilst working as a curator at the British museum and obtaining a firm academic background in the History of Photography that Drummond Read Recruitment placed Roland as Head of the photographic department at Bernard Shapero Rare books in Mayfair.

During the seven years in this role he produced a number of specialist catalogues and exhibitions. It was this experience that cemented his passion for this subject and enabled him to help build a number of private and institutional collections.

Since working on his own Roland has become an internationally recognised expert on photographic material and works on paper.

Drummond Read acted as experts and provided a legal report and valuation report for EMI as a result of a cleaning company whose operative inadvertently threw out £700,000 worth of original photographic images of the Beatles which attracted considerable media attention.
